In the Shadow. Women on the Move: Giving a Voice to Migrant Women

Article

The journeys of migrant women are often told through numbers, statistics, or administrative categories. Yet behind each journey lie personal stories, experiences, choices, and realities that are often complex and invisible.

In the Shadow. Women on the Move is a documentary co-directed by Marie Ruiz, Associate Professor of British Studies at the University of Picardie Jules Verne. Through the testimonies of migrant women, the film sheds light on a reality that is often underrepresented and invites viewers to take a fresh look at migration journeys.

The documentary highlights the various dimensions of these journeys. In particular, it shows the difficulties some women may face—such as precarious living conditions, violence, or discrimination—but also the personal journey that accompanies migration: self-reconstruction, resilience, and the search for a new place in a host society.

Personal Stories to Better Understand Migration

One of the film’s strengths is that it places women at the center of the narrative. Rather than treating migrant women as a homogeneous group, Women on the Move allows viewers to discover individual experiences and diverse life stories.

These stories thus contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the realities of migration. They also allow us to challenge certain stereotypes and reflect on how migrant women are perceived and portrayed in our societies.

The project highlights the importance of telling these stories and creating spaces where women can make their own voices heard. The reactions the documentary has elicited from diverse audiences also demonstrate its ability to evoke emotions, open up dialogue, and encourage collective reflection on the human and social issues related to migration.

A project that continues to bring these stories to life

In the Shadow. Women on the Move is part of a broader project that seeks to expand the ways in which the experiences of migrant women are shared.

Alongside the documentary, Women on the Move is also developing other resources and initiatives, including a virtual exhibition dedicated to the personal belongings of migrant women. Beyond their practical function, these objects can carry cultural and emotional significance and tell part of the story of the women who brought them with them.

The project also includes the creation of podcasts that give a voice to migrant women and those who support them. The goal is to gather a wider range of stories and perspectives in order to better understand the human and social realities behind migration journeys.

A Resource to Foster Dialogue

Through the film and the various accompanying initiatives, “Women on the Move” serves as a valuable resource for professionals, organizations, educational institutions, and anyone interested in exploring migration, representations, inclusion, and the role of women in society.

By placing the stories and voices of the women involved at the center, the project invites us, above all, to view migration differently: not only through the difficulties and obstacles, but also through the individual journeys, experiences, resilience, and aspirations of those who are living through them.
